I love the pop-up lights. I'm a very late member to the BARNDOOR CLUB.

Someone mentioned earlier(actually a few months ago ) that they don't have flash to pass on thier M1. My 96 has it. Do some earlier M1's not have it?

Went away for a week and I come back to 4 pages on Barndoors. Whew. Thought I missed all this in real time, turns out I'm just way late.

Calling all you artists out there, design a neat t-shirt for our club (vintage looking barn doors with wings, maybe. Leave off the Miata though, that way we will keep everyone but us clubbers in the know.)

It must be winter if this is all we have to talk about.

But, barndoors are the only reason I even bought a Miata (not really but darn close to the only reason).

I don't put the lights down anymore because I LOVE the way the Miata looks with the lights up. I like walking out of a store, and having my car sitting there smiling at me.

Barndoors Rule,

M1 looks better than M2 when the lights are retracted. M2 looks better than M1 when the lights are up.

I missed this thread the last time around because I didn't have a Miata yet. Now you can count me in x2 - for my 90 Miata, and for my early Saturn SC2, which also has pop-ups. They removed them from the 97+ SC2. Getting the pop-ups on my 95 was just as much of a factor in my decision as the lower price on the older car!

And as Red of course said, barndoors and Hella E-codes are a killer combo. Got 'em on my SC2, and they will be going on my Miata as soon as the $$ becomes available.

I believe all barns should have them. Otherwise the cows would run amuck. I also like the pop ups on my 95! Kinda remind me of my long departed Frogeye.

I love my pop-up lights on my Miata. Don't you remember when we were young the Lotus Elan who had pop-up lights ? It was a real sport car at that time, so, now...we have a copy of that Lotus Elan...

Pop-up headlights?...Yes! Gives the old models character. 6" round lights?...Nawwww, too big and ugly. Here's the hot set-up. A cheap home-brew conversion resulting in better lighting than the old 6" jobs. Gots to modify the geometry of the linkage, though, as the doors only have to come up less than half way.

I'm convinced the barn doors on my old '83 RX-7 saved my life when I hit a deer in the rear end a few years ago. Without the barn doors up, I'm sure the deer would have ended up through my windshield and on my front lap.

I'm a little late, but I love the barndoors. They give the car personality. Like one of the previous posts said, 1999+ models look just like every other car out there. Who wants to be ordinary?

I'm in. I don't have an opinion on how they look from outside the car, but when I am driving, I'll raise them so I can look down the hood and see these markers leading the way. I love the way I can see the reflections of overhead branches passing through. I love the red glaring back at me happily, reminding me that I'm in the little red sports car that I always wanted.

For me, flipping up the lights is an occasion. I always look for reasons to pop them up. If I can't find one, I do it anyway.

and I think its a much purer look when they are closed.

Before I bought my '97 last summer, I thought fixed headlights would be better. But...when I slide into the cockpit on a dark night and pop the barndoors, the visual effect is so cool...zesty!
