I'm not sure I see the point of this thread. It implies that there are people who DON'T like the barn doors. Surely this is an oversight on the part of the original poster?

I know the thread is old, (I was vacationing) but I'm for the Barndoor Club! I love the pop-ups. Don't get me wrong, I love the MM2 as well, but there is just something a bit more classy about MM1...

I also went with the older model "95" because of the POP UP LIGHTS. The Miata can have many looks that you can never get bored of ie..Top up, top down, lights up, lights down and many more with a good imagination.

Hate the look of the barn doors up while driving, too distracting, hate the aero drag too. LOVE the excellent illumination, though....can't beat a perfect parabola for focusing the light from my simple halogens from NAPA. WAY brighter than my Plymouth Breeze with slick '99 Miata-like headlamps that throw only a slight wash on the road....even 80/100 replacement bulbs suck against my Miata's.

Don't know how he did it, but there's a WAY simpler solution. Go to Radio Shack and buy a 12-volt buzzer (about $4). It has two leads on it. Strip the leads, hook one around the fuse for the headlights and the other around the fuse for the wipers. Since there's no juice to the wipers when the engine's off, the buzzer only sounds when the engine's off, there's juice to the lights but not the wipers. Then just magic-mount the buzzer under the dash. About a 5- minute job...as long as you can contort yourself to fit under the dash!

I think the pop ups are great, headlights are made for night-time driving and shouldn't be seen during the day. During the day the M1's look sleek and clean and at night they look bright and aggressive. As in architecture, form should always follow function, and thats exactly what they do.

Hi, Im new to this forum, and its really great. Ive had my 93 since 95 and love it. One thing I did to my headlights (for my young daughter), is to make some "eyelashes" on it. I took some bright white fabric tape, cut out four triangular shaped eyelashes, and put them on the black plastic surround above the headlights. Since the car color is white, and Name is "Lady M", we thought the feminine look was appropriate with the barndoors up!

Sign me up. The pop-ups in my M1 possess way more personality than the fixed beams in the M2.

When I was growing up, All the cars I coveted had pop-ups.

When my parents bought a new Accord LXi Sedan in 1988, I fell in love with the car. Here, we had a family sedan, and it had POP-UP HEADLIGHTS! I thought it was the coolest thing that Honda put pop-ups on a SEDAN! To this day, I think that was the best looking Accord ever done.

Anyhow, I was finally glad to get them with the M1.

You can count on me and my girlfriend LOVING the pop-ups... when we picked up her new 97M edition Saturday we played leap-frog all the way home, and each time we were behind the other we'd POP the lights up and down to wave hi!

I do like the new Miata lights, they are cat-like and very svelte (surely lighter than have a motor-driven pop-up) but they lack the smiley character of the M1. I definitely prefer the original.

It's been raining for about two weeks in NY.

Yesterday, I stepped outside my red 93 A and my girlfriend made the Barndooors go up and down about 20 Xs.

Sitting in the driver's seat you never really get the full effect.

I was giddy!

I agree on both counts. Why do we have so much rain -when it could be put to better use on the fires out west?

I love the way the barndoor lights come on before they are fully up, but I haven't seen it recently from outside. The drawback to your plan though, is that if my SO is in the drivers seat, I am likely to lose the car! The last time I tried that it cost me my 95 Maxima. She has put 50k on that one. If I drive Max then she is home with the Miata. Hmmm...not a good plan. Maybe the Barndoor Fan Club membership could explain how I could be in 2 places at once?

I'm late, but sign me up. I was skeptical about the barndoors, remembering those hideous giant Fords from the late '70s with the front mounted dual lights that rotated into the grill to "close" but never quite closed properly. Ugh. Fortunately Mazda got it right.

The M1's barndoors are a critical part of its personality - almost give it anamitronic abilities. Open, close, on, off - you have so many ways of expressing yourself through the car. It's wonderful. I'm a barndoor fan!

1) Pop-Ups

2) Chrome door handles

Why did Mazda have to take both??????

I've always like the "Bugeye" look the pop-ups gave. I never worried much about aero drag since air running over a bumpy, non tear-dropped shaped vinyl top probably contributes to more drag than the lights. And it's even worse with the top down.

Besides, how many of us actually run over 100mph on a regular basis, AT NIGHT? Those lights are only used at night, right? I think you'd be hard pressed to notice a difference in speed with the lights up or down.

I'm in! I bought my '94M last August. Is it possible to actually love a car? Err..uhh...Yup! Just as the love of my life has the most beautiful eyes that any human could ever have, my Miata has the most beautiful eyes that any car could ever have. I too share the fondness others have, since childhood, for pop-ups. My Celica has them, my Miata has them (the Miata's are much prettier, of course). Really cool cars, have pop-up headlights. All of the others are just that, all of the others. :P

---POP-UP Lights---
Ever see them coming up from behind you in the night? The way the parking lights always seem to be to the lower right side of the big round eyes coming at you.

Forget less HP than the 99+, you can't get that ROADSTER fun machine appeal without the popup lights. Moving parts like that rock!
I don't get my Miata til June(~4 months) but I can't wait to see the eyes come up. My 85 gslse rx7 is identical. Only change I'd make is that the lights would come up and flash when you do the "flash to pass" on the light switch. Now that would be and end all the the be all competition. As for the non pop up lights, bah, plenty of cars have nicer looking lights, nothing SPECIAL there.

Forgot to point out. Mazda took a gamble when they introduced the Miata. They were looking to create the new of the old roadster type car. Thinking back, is it any wonder how they got the pop-up lights? Would the car have sold as well with normal lights, probably. But when Miata designers were creating the lines, specs,... they decided the lights must be pop-ups for some reason. The same reason we all like them on this thread. It's inside us. The lil voice that says, "Cool." everytime we pop the lights up. I care somewhat about how they work/weight reliability...yada yada yada. But I must say, it's a small price to pay for the feeling I get when I pop up the RX7s lights. They are the eyes to the car and make the characteristics I desire in a car among other things.

Flashing people out of junctions always gets a smile! I know of at least 1 sale mazda lost out on - my friend was getting a new company car and MX5 was an option - until he found out they no longer came with pop-ups!

Ya, I remember this commerial for some insurance company way back and there was this lamborghini up a cliff. The camera was circling the car and the lights popped up and flashed twice. It was too sweet. Since I dont have the Miata yet, I cant say how they work in America, but the RX7, theres a flash to pass on the light switch but they do not come up so unless you manually put them up with the light switch or with the switch on the dashboard. So no one would see the lights flashing without that pre setup of the headlight. Why can't they just make it so you pull back on the light switch and if you do 2 pulls the lights come up and flash, start to go back down and instead, turn around and go back up and flash again...
That would be the clencher
