Barndoors are okay, but I'm a purist. BRING BACK the lanterns! BRING BACK the Lanterns!
Just think what our Colonial American ancestors would have had to endure if they had Pop-Ups before lanturns... They'd have had to have a separate switches on their Miata lights so they could signal, INDIVIDUALLY "One if by land, Two if by sea...." And think of the mix-ups that might have occurred if they'd have had Pop-Ups instead of lanterns, i.e. Johnny's mother shouts upstairs "Wake up Johnny, your Pop Tarts are ready..." and Johnny cries "Waaah! I Don't Wanna eat Pop-Ups!"

Actually, I DO like the pop-ups, even if it seems Un-American... I like Big Round Headlights. Perhaps it's Freudian, but there they are! However, they're not aerodynamic and they CAN contribute to pedestrian injuries, so one should expect them to disappear from production cars.

I love the pop-ups. Every car I've ever bought has had them (Opel GT, Fiero, Miata), but the stock pop-ups are too big for me. Thats why the low profile headlights are among the first mods I've done to each of my Miatae. I prefer to call the barn doors -- speed brakes

If you think those are barn doors and just there so you can have light on the road, you ain't drivin fast enough. Them's SPEED BRAKES folks. Just like the big jets have. Yep, just followed a friend home tonight and sure enough on the freeway off ramp, I discovered what those suckers are REALLY for. Speed brakes all the way.

Love 'em to death!

It's great to watch the water sliding off the top of the lights as you're driving at night (IMHO!).

Love my pop-ups... especially the way they look from the driver's seat when driving. Something sporty and exotic about it. My 1981 RX-7, 1990 Laser Turbo, and 1983 Supra all had 'em. Bring them back!

Pop-ups aren't just headlights, they are a form of communication, too! At a light recently, the on-coming traffic got a left turn arrow, and there is this blond in a red M1 turning in front of me. Basic instinct - I popped the headlights - and got a big smile and a wave. I was all set to get an M2 until then, but now I just can't do it. You can get more than wind resistance from popping up the headlights!

When I was in 7th Grade, my Engllish Teacher bought a brand new '63 silver Corvette Stingray (split window) coupe. For several days the Jr. High boys would begin and end each school day in the parking lot watching him arrive and depart. '63 Vettes had flip over headlights. I have been a fan of disappearing, flip-over,or pop-ups ever since. They make it awkward to run headlights in the day for safety, but the parking lights can perform this function almost as well. Some sacrifices have to be made for the sake of Art and beauty.

[QUOTE]Originally posted by Richard/92C:
[B]Although the "Barn Doors" are an interesting "character" feature of the M1, I would prefer NOT to have them for several reasons:

1) Compromised aerodynamics and consequent increase in fuel consumption.

2) Increased weight

3)Greater complexity - higher failure probability

4) Risk of freezing shut in winter with potential for damage if operated when frozen

5)More surface area to clean (and very difficult to clean under)(at least they don't collect bugs when not in use)

Form must not compromise function!

1) We drive sports cars not Ford Escorts.
2) The M1 still achieves 50/50 weight distribution (and quit reading what the "experts" have to say for the change)
3) Extremely rare. I've never had a problem with my Miata nor earlier Rx-7. Trust me, my 4 yr old nephew has put them to the test.
4) 1" thick ice on hood/lights in Durango 1989. Popped up the Rx-7 lights and watched ice shatter. Not a problem - the motors are seriously strong (same motor in the Miata).
5)Try cleaning under a fixed headlight

This is form over function. Function comes first, then form. The M1 barn doors are of great form and then they still function perfectly!

Thanks Richard for playing Devils' Advocate - that was fun!

94 White,

Always happy to provide a little fun! Continuing in that vein ….

1. All design involves compromise*, however, the essence of the sports car is to bias the compromise toward dynamic performance at the possible expense of style or amenities. Earlier sports cars looked different from other cars largely because they offered the improved aerodynamics of race cars in a era when street car aerodynamics were of little concern. And fuel economy IS important, even in a racing venue, pit stops are costly! Power consumed by headlight drag could better be used to propel the car more quickly.

2. Weight distribution is not the end game – WEIGHT IS STILL THE ENEMY and any opportunity to reduce it without sacrificing necessary function is GOOD!

3. Perhaps the WET snow / freezing rain that we have in Virginia differs from the Colorado experience – no way my pop-ups would have broken last winters crusts! If the motors are that strong they would have bent something!

4. That a design may be complex yet reliable is not the point. Avoiding unnecessary complexity obviates the question. Complexity also has cost implications and as new challenges enter the market it is important that Mazda cling to the low ground.

5. Admittedly a trivial concern, but I’ve not had a car with fixed headlights that covered such large “rat holes” and cleaning them requires pulling fuses (or otherwise disabling the motors) to avoid risking an appendage.

As I said, the barn doors DO provide character and I too enjoy their charm – just not enough to justify the compromises. If “charm” were the yardstick we might be driving PT Cruisers – oops, that’s a different thread.

Regards,
Richard

Pop ups are the only way to go. For all that I'm concerned, the last of the Miatas ended in 1997. (just so happens that's what I got since there won't be any more) Now the 99+ looks like everything else out there. The semi-American looks are gone without the classical pop ups. Long live 90-97 Miatas, last models of a great design.

When I found this amazing car, I was lookin at a firebird(yuck!) I simply wanted pop-up lights ever since I got my driver's license.
From the front with the lights up, mini-me(my miata) has a face with a big smile. The 99+ doesn't have a face. It looks like a car.

Membership never exceeded 1000 though. Damn!

I love me some barn doors.

I think it may be an age thing. Possibly, we oldtimers like the barn doors because it has a "nostalgic feel"

And the young skippys like the M2's lights better because they don't share our nostalgia.

Then again, maybe not.
