Hate the new lights?

Fear the M2.5's won't "light" your fire?

Do you mistrust those who modify their M1 lights?

Join the BARNDOOR FAN CLUB right here!
Come out of the illuminary closet.

We're here. We pop up. GET USED TO IT!

-Eff

PS I pop'em up thrice daily in New York to innocent bystanders and the people seem to love it. I'm proud to be spreading Miata lovin' all over.

Who else is with me here!?!

I like my pop up lights.

You have to admit that when you were a little kid, a car was not a sports car unless the lights popped up.

I've never had a car that didn't have pop up lights. As as kid, I loved those things. That and tons of 'zaust pipes. I still like the pop-up headlights and I hope Mazda goes back to them for the next-gen miatae. At least put some round headlights in there... none of that MX6/Camaro crap!

Love them barndoors. This is classical British Sports Car stuff, without the stigma of the "Prince of Darkness".

Kids love them too.

I'll join. The only headlight mod I plan is a pair of 7" Hella e-codes w/ Xenon bulbs.

Right after I got Lucille, I took her over to my folks' hous to borrow the Dremel and enable the temporary trunk-release disable. My 5-year old nephew was there, and when I finished I said, now let's put the top down (note to the top-down police: it had been raining earlier). He gave me a puzzled look and said, "Put the top down?" Boy was he impressed at cousin Ted's new car!

The fun was only beginning, though, and then I showed him the headlight button on the dash. He had all kinds of fun that afternoon "driving" to Chicago in the driveway, putting the lights up and down as it got dark and light. Hah. Try that in the M2!

All good things eventually come back into fashion. Ten years from now, people who once frowned on pop-ups will be rushing out to buy a new "retro" styled car, and paying premium prices because of the barndoors.

You're not going to see any more popups on new Miatas, though. European regulations apparantly won't allow them in the future. This request was made to Tom Matano when he asked the crowd in Bruges for suggestions on the M3 (NC?).

I like my popups because they're so effective. 7" round reflectors are about as good as they get, and we can pop in high quality replacements with big bulbs and get serious illumination for a really low price. After all, they're there to LIGHT THINGS UP!

Pop-ups are one reason why I want an earlier Miata. They're also one of the reasons why, out of all the Saturns (my daily driver), I wanted an earlier Saturn coupe. I'm a hopeless child of the 80s. Sure, the motors may break and it's one more thing that can go wrong. But they're cool.

They look a hell of a lot better than those goofy 99-plus lamps ! I think the M1's will bottom out this year and start the usual Classic Body style appreciation, that is, the prices will go up ! If you like the sprightly , nimble sportycar look, the M1 fits in there with the MGT's ( TC,TD,TF ) and the B. The M2's seem more like a Z3 or a Vette, more heavy looking. I wonder if there's much weight diff between the M1 & 2 ?

I have to say. . .What a absolute load of cr*p. You must, though, have a keen eye for weight differences. . .

1995 Miata = 2293#
1999 Miata = 2299#

I like the looks of both. Considering the obvious generation 3 RX-7 features found in the 99+, that the M2 seems to have a sportycar look to atleast some of us.

I think you will need another 10 to 15 years before pristine, undriven Miatas have collector value. sheesh.

Sorry Matty, no pics yet, just put the chromed lids on but will post when I get some.

I bought new lids for $27.00 each and had them chromed for $75.00 each. Gives the front of the car a really distinctive and more aggressive look. Especially in combo with the KG Works stainless TSI's that I also installed.

Well they are both fine lookers, except the M2's have the look of salamander that's just been goosed....I don't think you'll have to wait 10-15 years for the M1 prices to rise; the TR's started upward when the Tr7 wedgie came along ( uugly, I know,- I had one ). Anytime there's a radical body change it starts the juices flowing somewhere. I might get an M2 someday, but the headlights will get a new treatment !

Although the "Barn Doors" are an interesting "character" feature of the M1, I would prefer NOT to have them for several reasons:

1) Compromised aerodynamics and consequent increase in fuel consumption.

2) Increased weight

3)Greater complexity - higher failure probability

4) Risk of freezing shut in winter with potential for damage if operated when frozen

5)More surface area to clean (and very difficult to clean under)(at least they don't collect bugs when not in use)

Form must not compromise function!

John Cerioli,
what classic British sports cars are you thinking of?? Some latter day Triumphs (hardly classic) are the only ones that I recall with pop-ups. (Oh yeah, there was the Elan - very small numbers)

Regards,
Richard

Hmmmm... After looking at that, I'm going into the garage and stroke my '97 ! That M2.5 certainly was different, or was it...? Is it just me, or does it seem that most new cars appear designed by the same firm ?

I like my popups also. But I think I would like the M2 lights better. Don't get me wrong, the only things I like better on the M2 are the lights and the additional HP. I like the looks of the M1 much more, and I guess you could say part of that is because of the pop up lights.

I'd love to see the lines of the M1 with the headlights from the (GASP! ) New Beetle. Or maybe, the lights from the Boxter. That'd give you the Round light look, but with the cleaner lines of the older car.

Hey Bill - check out the 2001 M2.5 headlights.

Well, I guess I'm the odd man out... I really like the exposed lights, and I think those new lights for the M2.5's look really great. I'm beginning to appriciate the barndoors, though... They make it easy to acknowledge fellow Miata drivers, just one button press.

I must admit though, I do plan to get the BSP low-pro kit. I LOVE that Acura NSX look.

I agree that Mazda made a mistake gettng rid of the pop-ups. When I first saw the M2 at the autoshow, I thought it looked like a space alien. The M1 style is MUCH cleaner and more pleasing to the eye. (Although I do like the 10AE).

While the barndoors are truly classic, and as Keith stated in post #11 above, they may not be able to come back so, Light 'em if you got 'em!

Now on the 99+, the fixed are not that bad looking, they just can't be as fun as 'the wavers'.

I guess barn doors are an aquired taste for some of us.
I never had them before and didn't like them before I bought my '97R.
Now I love them, but only with round headlights.
When they're up they give the car a quirky, Bugeye (or Frogeye) Sprite kind of look.
