Back in 2004 I discovered a place on the web that was trying to collect a photo of every post office in the U.S. This sounded a lot like Don Quixote’s quest and that made it right up my alley. After 3 months and around 3 dozen photos we dropped the whole thing because none of the photos I submitted were added to The Postal Gallery Database. I guess they lost interest because the last update was in February 2004.
Then a chance encounter with a PO at the end of 2006 sparked our interest again. Even if it was a lost cause for the Postal Gallery Database folks, it was a perfect excuse for Donna and I to do something together we both like, drive around back roads and take photos. In 2007 we photographed 310 of the 454 South Carolina Post Offices, most of the remaining 100 were done in 2008 with the last few photographed in early 2009.
Tamassee - 29686 - The town basically just consists of the buildings of the Tamassee DAR School, a children's home and family service organization. (09/22/07)
Tatum - 29594 - The first thing you see when entering this small town is the post office. Unfortunately we were coming from the other direction. Fortunately, after locating 180 other Post Offices, I am getting real good at spotting POs from any direction. (07/15/07)
Taylors - 29687 - We probably drove right by this Post Office earlier in the day, but we weren't looking for it. I was hunting the Furman University PO and thought I was on US25 but was really on US29. Ooops. (06/27/2007)
Tigerville - 29688 - There was a fellow in his pickup truck just off frame to he right talking on his cell phone the whole time we were there. He had his door open and was apparently not as bothered as we were by the incessant chime sounding letting him know his keys were in the ignition. (09/01/07)
Tillman - 29943 - Tillman's Post Office occupies a small section of a building that is mostly quick stop. Makes it convenient for you to cash your government check and pick up a lottery ticket with a 32oz bottle of beer. (01/27/07)
Timmonsville - 29161 - The Holiday Inn Express cinnamon bun must not have kicked in yet, because this was our first PO of the day and I don't remember it at all. (08/05/07)
Townville - 29689 - Nice big letters on the outside of the building, but in this case too big, as they can't be captured without a brick column interrupting them. (10/14/07)
Travelers Rest - 29690 - Dog gone it. While I was taking the photos of this Post Office a dog wandered through and was captured on two of the exposures. At first I though maybe I should clone the dog into the image a bunch more times so it looked like a pack wandered through, but in the end I decided to just airbrush him out. (10/14/07)
Trenton - 29847 - That person off to the left is my wife Donna who now enjoys these little Post Office Picture Expeditions much more when she brings a magazine. She now passes the time catching up on the latest news or home improvement tips instead of waiting impatiently out of camera range while I crouch around or cross the street or whatever to get a good angle on the Post Offices. (03/21/04)
Troy - 29848 - The small town of Troy has a Post Office with it's name and zip code outside. I need to do a little research on post office building to see who decides whether money gets spent on putting a name on the outside or not. (02/10/07)
Turbeville - 29162 - Looking at just this picture you would be hard pressed to guess this was a Post Office, but off to the left is the flag pole, right behind me is the blue box and there are a bunch of other POs in the state using this very same building style. (03/02/08)
Ulmer - 29849 - At the junction of US301 & US321 is the town of Ulmer. Not a lot to it besides this Post Office and the rundown little building next to it. (03/03/07)
Una - 29378 - Although this place has a name and a Post Office of its very own, Una is just another part of the growing Spartanburg. (09/02/07)
Union - 29379 - The 'big' town of Union's Post Office was a hoppin' spot on a Friday afternoon. (11/02/07)
Van Wyck - 29744 - Another "cul-de-sac" mill town. There was one loop road in and out from the main highway. It also had another of South Carolina's shuttered mills meaning everyone living here probably drives into Lancaster to work. (12/02/07)
Vance - 29163 - This must really be a very new building. Look at that pristine expanse of concrete with nary a greasy oil spot in sight. (04/20/08)
Varnville - 29944 - Doesn't the name of this town remind you of Ernest P Worrell. Know what I mean Vern? (08/19/07)
Vaucluse - 29850 - Vaucluse is a bitsy town that sprouted up around a mill. This is a relic of days gone by, a one room Post Office, but it is still in use today. I had to park the Miata across the street, as there is no real parking out front, just a road. It actually enhanced the picture using that angle. (01/24/04)
Wadmalaw Island - 29487 - Plain ol' box Post Office in a very Low Country setting. (02/06/09)
Wagener - 29164 - The last Post Office in what was a 10 PO day and it was totally uneventful. No crowds, no trouble finding it, no neat old post office nearby, just park, shoot and go. (02/24/07)
Walhalla - 29691 - I don't know what the woman and her daughter were doing inside, but they were in there for a long time. (09/22/07)
Wallace - 29596 - The green garbage container makes a nice complimentary end piece to the blue mail box. (07/15/07)
Walterboro - 29488-2577 - [Palmetto Parcels Plus CPU] The parking lot was nearly empty when we pulled in, but by the time I got the camera out of the trunk I was surrounded on both sides by cars of people going shopping. Undaunted, I just picked a different angle than the one I first thought of. (11/16/07)
Walterboro - 29488-3919 - Our Google map failed to mention that downtown Walterboro was a warren of one-way streets, so it took us way too long to find this Post Office. (08/19/07)
Walterboro - 29488-5753 - [Canadys] Not only can you mail a package, but you can feast on hot taters and chicken or buy bait and tackle. As far as the USPS is concerned this is a Walterboro Post Office with a zip code of 29488-5753, but the defiant sign outside the Penny Pincher Mart says it is the Post Office for Canadys, SC 29433. (11/16/07)
Ward - 29166 - I can not believe we missed this one, but we were following the map off of the USPS web site. It showed the Post Office as being a couple streets in parallel to the main drag, so when we hit the edge of town we turned left to go looking. Never found it. We then doubled back and sure enough, there it was right on the main drag, 50 yards past where we turned off. (03/21/04)
Ware Shoals - 29692 - My timing was right for this one. This series of Post Offices were shot on a Saturday morning so most of them had cars in the parking lot. This one did too, right before and right after I took this picture. (6/16/2007)
Warrenville - 29851 - Here is the last of the small mill towns that populate the Horse Creek valley along SC421 between Aiken & Augusta. The folks through here must have some major pull with the USPS somehow, as here is the third Post Office that is less than 10 years old within 5 miles of each other. (02/22/04)
Waterloo - 29384 - Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war Waterloo - promise to love you for ever more Waterloo - couldn’t escape if I wanted to Waterloo - knowing my fate is to be with you Waterloo - finally facing my waterloo -ABBA (6/17/2007)
Wedgefield - 29168 - We've seen a million Post Offices in this style building and it always makes me wonder where the previous PO would have been and what it looked like. (08/05/07)
Wellford - 29385 - This small town looks like it is about to dry up and blow away. The railroad tracks run through the middle of town on an elevated berm. The only way to get from Main St. to Railroad St. is to pass under the tracks through a one lane tunnel. Judging by all the flaked concrete and chipped paint in the tunnel I'm betting it is narrower than a lot of people would like. (09/03/07)
West Columbia - 29169 - This is not part of a shopping center, even though from this photo it appears that it is. This one big building is all Post Office. (03/25/07)
West Columbia - 29170-2168 - [Columbia AMF] We learned a new postal acronym today, AMF, which stands for Air Mail Facility. This one stands on the perimeter road of the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. (03/25/07)
West Columbia - 29170-2878 - [Woodberry Plaza CPU] After our Anderson experience we should have known better, but we were still perplexed when we didn't see this post office from the road it's addressed on. After a second pass, light bulb went on above our heads and we found our goal in a shopping center. (03/25/07)
West Union - 29696 - Nondescript Post Office with a great sky for a backdrop. (09/22/07)
Westminster - 29693 - There was another one of those read your mail in the truck people loitering here. Getting just the right angle for the shot kept the other vehicle out of the image. (09/22/07)
Westville - 29175 - Doesn't really look like it, but it is lightly raining. This is on US521 and there was a bit of big truck traffic, so I had to wait on gaps to snap the photos. Not only that, when a truck passed it left behind a wake of cold wet mist that I had to turn my back to each time. (12/02/07)
White Rock - 29177 - I'm going to make a postcard of this image so Donna can send it to her cousin that lives in White Rock, British Columbia. (02/24/07)
White Stone - 29386 - This is the one we skipped nine days ago because it was crowded and thought it was a neat enough Post Office to try and capture right. Unfortunately we were thwarted again because in the mornings the sun is directly behind the building. This'll have to do. (11/11/07)
Whitmire - 29178 - There was one woman in a parked car in the row behind me. She sat there through out as Donna walked up and down Main St, I took a couple pictures and then joined Donna in the last half of the tour. No clue what that woman was doing. Staking out the Town Hall, which is directly across the street, maybe? (11/02/07)
Williams - 29493 - A very quiet little town about 4 miles off the main road. Te only thing stirring was the one fellow right across the street who was trimming his hedges. (08/25/07)
Williamston - 29697 - This Post Office was really hopping on Saturday morning. I knew right off that getting an empty parking lot save for the Miata was going to be impossible. So I included a person getting out her vehicle as another was backing up to leave. (6/16/2007)
Williston - 29853 - Back when I first started this foolishness, I mapped out a couple dozen Post Offices that were close enough to us to make nice short half day outings. Some of the bitty towns strung out along eastbound US78 made for one. Between the SMALL towns of Windsor and Elko, both with Post Offices, sat the decent sized town of Williston without one. I didn't see the logic in that. As we drove through Williston today, what should we spy on a parallel street to our route, that's right, a Post Office. (03/03/07)
Windsor - 29856 - Temporary was not temporary forever, but it was for a very long time. In 2007 a new Post Office was built about a mile down the road rom the trailer.
Windsor - 29856 - When their small Post Office burned to the ground, it was replaced with this temporary trailer, about 10 years ago. I think temporary has turned into permanent. (02/15/04)
Winnsboro - 29180 - Winnsboro is the county seat of Fairfield county and the biggest place we went through today. And the Post Office reflects that. (09/09/07)
Woodruff - 29388 - From the Woodruff City Council Meeting on June 25, 2007: -> City Mayor Paul Bell called the public hearing to order to discuss the FY 2007-2008 Budget. -> Rev. Steve Ramey of New Life Baptist Church led the group in a brief devotional. -> Mr. Bob Hix was first to discuss the budget. Mr. Hix complained he was not getting anything for his taxes since council had not eliminated the sanitation fee of $20.00. -> Mrs. Marty Smith complained that the city was spending $50,000 to promote the city when she felt the funds could be better used to clean up the city. Smith was told that two part time employees for the street department were included in the budget to clean the sidewalks around town. -> With no further complaints, the public hearing was closed. (09/01/07)
Yemassee - 29945 - As we pulled in here we heard a train whistle and just down the street (and the way we were going to leave town) the train crossing gates were coming down. I guessed it was going to be a long freight train and we would be here awhile, but it wasn't, so we took two pictures and hit the road. (08/19/07)
York - 29745 - Lovely, modern Post Office and we caught a lucky break in that the only other car in the lot was out of camera range. (11/11/07)
