2006 Florida Trip
Cooper River Bridge - Sunday we are off to Charleston to visit the South Carolina Aquarium. This view of the Cooper River Bridge which carries traffic in and out of the city is from one of the balconies on the back of the aquarium. (11/19/06)
South Carolina Aquarium - Donna and I love to visit aquariums, but had never made the trip down to Charleston to visit its big fish zoo. We were mildly disappointed and if we never go back it will be soon enough. (11/19/06)
Fishies - I really like the ghostly images in the upper right hand corner of the photo. One is a reflection, but the one that looks like a little girl dancing is really a fish but its attitude and the flash make it seem like something else. (11/19/06)
Pink Pachyderms - Monday on our way to Savannah I spotted these big elephants outside of a fireworks store, so I had to stop and take a picture. The one on the left is actually pink and the one on the right is gray that I colorized so that everyone seeing this will start to hum "Pink Elephants on Parade" from Dumbo. (11/20/06)
Savannah Railroad Museum Roundhouse - Right next to the Savannah city welcome center is a railroad museum that has an old roundhouse as it's centerpiece. (11/20/06)
Savannah Railroad Museum Decor - They have closed up these old window openings with various scenes from the heyday of railroading. (11/20/06)
Savannah Railroad Museum Old Locomotive - I'm sure this old locomotive has a storied history, but I know none of it. I just thought it looked cool. (11/20/06)
St. Simon's Island Beach - Monday afternoon's low tide. You know how I know it is low tide? There is beach. In this area of the island when the tide comes in it crashes on those rocks on the left. (11/20/06)
St. Simon's Island Lighthouse - Four bucks gets you into an interesting little museum and lets you walk up the hundred odd steps to the top where you get a really good 360? view of, well, St Simon's Island. (11/20/06)
Cap't Dan's Shrimp Boat - Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. The Village Inn and Pub - Very nice room followed by a mediocre continental breakfast the next morning. (11/20/06)
A1A Ferry - Tuesday morning as soon as we got into Florida, we got off the Interstate and started driving on A1A south. This ferry crosses the St. Johns River east of Jacksonville and is the last remaining ferry in the state of Florida. (11/21/06)
Birds Ride Free - It cost us $3.25 to ride the boat, but the birds ride free. I guess they figured we were going to feed them too. (11/21/06)
New Smyrna Beach Boardwalk - At the north end of town there is this mile and a half long elevated boardwalk. One side faces the ocean, one side an inlet and another the intercostal waterway. There are also about a half dozen spurs that come off of it that go to those areas. (11/21/06)
Sunset on the Boardwalk - We got to the New Smyrna Beach Boardwalk as the sun was going down and it made for an awesome experience. (11/21/06)
Stormy Water - On Wednesday the skies were cloudy, the temperature was 20° below normal and it was windy making for interesting surf, but surely limited our time outdoors. (11/22/06)
Johnny Law - Even though I was running right at the speed limit, Johnny Law shadowed me for a couple miles when we drove through Daytona Beach. (11/22/06)
