Photo Friday

Spectators - This wasn't taken in 2004 and it wasn't submitted for any photo meme this year. But I did post it on my site this past July after I scanned the original slide. This picture was taken on Guam in September of 1978 at an off-road racing event. Here, some islanders watch the show from their truck. I think what makes this picture is the lone can of Bud on the ground in the front. 😉 (12/31/2004)

Radiant - The sun is radiant on a mid-morning in September. During a Master's Miata Club trip we made a side stop to see Georgia's "Stonhenge" and like the original in England, it's construction is surrounded by mystery too...read about it here - http://www.radioliberty.com/stones.htm. (11/05/2004)

Still Life - "Chihuahuas and Pressure Switch" Before starting work this morning I rearranged a few items on my desk to capture this one. I kind of like the way the dogs are looking off in the same direction, like a trainer is holding a treat out for them, plus their ears line up with the shadows. (10/29/2004)

Domestic - There have been plenty of sports cars posted here; maybe a Miata picture or two, even a shot of a Boxster recently, but those are foreign cars. This is an All-American brute of a sports car, the 2003 Ford Mustang Cobra with 390HP of super-charged V-8 muscle in bright red. Can you say demonic domestic delivery device? (09/17/2004)

Blossom - These are the blossoms of a very popular ornamental plant here in South Carolina called Pampas Grass. The first time my mother visited us, she fell in love with the look and wanted some for her yard. We sent her a plant when she got home and it blossomed once towards the end of summer. Over the winter the plant died, apparently the Connecticut climate is not temperate enough to grow this stuff. (09/10/2004)

Modern - A modern interpretation of Dr. Ferdinand Porsche's idea for a sports car. This one is oh so different from the little 356 Carrera Speedster he envisioned, yet so similar. (08/27/2004)

Neglect - While my wife and her mother wandered around the Augusts History Museum's Lindbergh Exhibit I wandered around outside in the rundown warehouses in the area. Here is my favorite from the 2-dozen images shot. (03/26/2004)

Perspective - I took the camera to work to shoot for today's challenge, but during a tough day at the end of a tough week, I couldn't get the time nor motivation to actually think about taking a picture. Here at home in front of the PC it is much nicer and more relaxed. With the changed perspective I can think of a couple of good images from my work place that I could have capture, I ain't going back even if I was guaranteed a Pulitzer Prize for photography for the image. Monday is damn well soon enough. (03/05/2004)

Motion - The Hulk roller coaster at Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida emerges from a "smoke" filled tunnel. After launching you like a jet off an aircraft carrier (using magnetics instead of steam) up a hundred feet in the air or so, rolling you 360 degrees, it then plunges down into the lake via a tunnel, where you emerge heading back up for more thrills. This is all in the first 15 seconds of the ride. 🙂 (01/16/2004)

Downtown - Vegas Baby! This was taken in the downtown area, not the strip, in May of 1995. I was using my point and shoot camera loaded with Seattle Filmworks film. When they processed the roll they were offering this new service where you could get your pictures on a computer disk! The graininess of this image reminds me of the U2 video for "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." (11/07/2003)

Night - It was a dark and stormy night....'Like an expensive sports car, fine-tuned and well-built, Portia was sleek, shapely, and gorgeous, her red jumpsuit molding her body, which was as warm as the seat covers in July, her hair as dark as new tires, her eyes flashing like bright hubcaps, and her lips as dewy as the beads of fresh rain on the hood; she was a woman driven, fueled by a single accelerant, and she needed a man, a man who wouldn't shift from his views, a man to steer her along the right road, a man like Alf Romeo.' 1988 Winner, Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest - Rachel E. Sheeley, Williamsburg, Indiana. (10/31/2003)

Power - A picture of the POWERSURGE ride at the Western Carolina Fair. There was supposed to be fireworks Wednesday night at 9:30, so Donna and I parked across the street to wait. I set up the tripod and snapped a couple images while we waited. And waited, and waited. Finally gave up about 9:50 and packed it in. When we got home about 15 minutes later, I could swear I heard the distance thuds of fireworks. Carnival workers don't wear watches I guess. (10/24/2003)

Body - These are the cast aluminum bodies of a gas mixing valve we make that go into gas pumps for service stations. There are hundreds of them in our stock room awaiting assembly, with almost as many on the line being built. It boggles my mind that that many new gas pumps are being sold, there must be a heck of a lot of new stations going in. (10/17/2003)

Translucent - This is a simple device that makes your third brake light flash several times before going steady as a safety measure. If you drove a small car, like a Miata, in a world of giant SUVs you might want one of these Brake Lite Blinkers too. A fellow I work with, Lynn Stucky, makes them in his kitchen, pouring epoxy into the bottom of a paper cup over a circuit board he has made. (10/10/2003)

Found - Tomorrow morning is Adopt-A-Highway with the Aiken Bicycle Club and a nice shot of the stack of orange trash bags placed next to "our" sign would have been perfect, but Donna and I are leaving on vacation right after the trash pick-up for a week. I will be without a PC or Internet access until next Thursday, so there would be no way to post the picture. So instead I give you a picture of what I found in the company parking lot this morning. A co-worker brought in his "new" car, a 1967 Chevy Camaro convertible. (09/19/2003)

Broken - Photo Friday made me wait, so to show it who's boss and that I was not intimidated, I waited until today to post. - Every Thursday the city picks up our garbage, our recyclables and any trash you put in the street, from sofas to washing machines. Last Wednesday night my wife, who spends as much time watching HGTV as I do in front of this PC, collected this broken chair for some future household project. (08/24/2003)

Sleep - A natural and healthy, but temporary and periodical, suspension of the functions of the organs of sense, as well as of those of the voluntary and rational soul; that state of the animal in which there is a lessened acuteness of sensory perception, a confusion of ideas, and a loss of mental control, followed by a more or less unconscious state. How I wish I could pass my workday, but management frowns on this sort of behavior. (08/08/2003)

Identity - When you play for the Kingsport (TN) Mets in the Appalachian (Rookie) League the only way we know your identity is to check the line-up board before the game so we can put name to number while you are on the field. Rarely at this level of baseball do they bother to put names on the backs of your jersey because of the cost. The home team Martinsville Astros were an exception to this. (07/20/2003)

Symmetry - Photo of the "Quilt" Garden at the North Carolina Arboretum near Asheville last October. As a happy coincidence of our visit, they were having a Bonsai Exhibit inside and I took a bunch of pictures of tiny trees. As an unhappy coincidence, when I downloaded them, they were all blurry because I had the flash set wrong. (07/11/2003)
