2012 Northeast Trip

VMI - As we always try and do we took the Sally Lewis Loop Walk which cuts through both VMI and Washington & Lee when we pass thru Lexington, VA. (08/31/12)

Virginia Covered Bridge - Just north of New Market I spotted a sign that read "Covered Bridge", so I hung a quick left and made the short drive to Meem's Bottom Covered Bridge. It is the only remaining covered bridge in VA that still allows vehicular traffic. (08/31/12)

Dinosaurs - As much of a surprise as yesterday's covered bridge was, the sight of this bit of Roadside America on our way to the Scottish Games was even bigger. Pun intended. (09/01/12)

Giant Octopus - Good thing there was a fence with barbed wire on top to keep this monster from devouring unsuspecting kids in the parking lot. (09/01/12)

Big Guys Throwing Big Rocks - At every Scottish Games I've ever been to there is always an athletic competition. This is the first one I've been to where they had a Professional Division. (09/01/12)

Cousin Duncan Solo Piping - After judging the pipe bands the cousins compete in a solo piping contest. Both of the cousins are so good that they usually finish one - two. (09/01/12)

Cousin Jimmy Solo Piping - After judging the pipe bands the cousins compete in a solo piping contest. Both of the cousins are so good that they usually finish one - two. (09/01/12)

A Hundred Pipers Piping - At most all of these festivals they gather all the pipe bands together after they have competed separately and they play a few songs. Pretty cool stuff. (09/01/12)

Scottish Games Group Photo - left to right: Cousin Susie, Cousin Dun?can, Donna, Me, Cousin Jimmy, Cousin Lau?rie, Howard. These are all Donna's cousins except for Howard and me. Laurie & Susie are daughters of her father's brother while Duncan and Jimmy are brothers of her father's sister. Got that? (09/01/12)

Jim Thorpe Statue - On a brief foray off I-84 in Pennsylvania we serendip?i?tously drove through a small town that had been renamed for the man King Gus?tav V of Swe?den called the great?est ath?lete in the world, Jim Thorpe. If you are won?der?ing how the town got his name, even though Jim never set foot in while he was alive. (09/02/12)

Winsted, CT Civil War Monument - After Paul joined us we did some geocaching. Tthis was our first stop. A civil war monument that is only open for the public to go inside on three days a year and tis one one of them. Only trouble was it was 8:30 AM and it didn't open until 1:00 PM. Sigh. (09/03/12)

Sheffield, MA Covered Bridge - No cache here, but we stopped to take a photo and get a leg stretch. (09/03/12)

Downers, VT Covered Bridge - No cache here either, but Vermont law requires that all tourists stop and photograph any covered bridge they come within a mile of. (09/03/12)

Port Clyde, ME Lobstah Boats - This is where the ferry to Monhegan leaves from, but the three of us decided to check it out the night before. While there we had dinner of lobster rolls. (09/04/12)

Pemaquid Lighthouse - This lighthouse is practically on the way to Port Clyde from my cousin's house in Waldoboro, so made a stop after dinner to take a couple photos. (09/04/12)

Burnt Head - The back side of the Island is lined with high ocean cliffs which are actually some of the highest on the entire Maine coast. (09/06/12)

White Head - The back side of the Island is lined with high ocean cliffs which are actually some of the highest on the entire Maine coast. (09/06/12)

Little White Head - The back side of the Island is lined with high ocean cliffs which are actually some of the highest on the entire Maine coast. (09/06/12)

Monhegan Lighthouse - From the hill the lighthouse resides on you can watch the sunrise over the ocean to the east and in the evening to the west see the sun set over the ocean. (09/06/12)

Village of Monhegan - The view of the village from the lighthouse. The white house a third of the way from the left is the Vaughn House, temporary home to Muffy & Ralph. (09/06/12)

Artist Workshop - Mon?hegan has always been a haven for artists and there are numerous artist work?shops there every summer. While we were there, we stum?bled onto this group sev?eral times at var?i?ous loca?tions around the island. (09/07/12)

Window to the Porch - This is the view out the living room of the Vaughn House that my cousin Martha and her husband rent for 2 weeks every September. (09/06/12)

Foggy Boat - The morning we left the island started clear, but turned foggy by mid-morning. (09/07/12)

Foggy House - While Donna and Paul watched an island resident create colorful welcome mat form nylon rope, I wondered around a bit and took some pictures. This is the house next door. (09/07/12)

Monhegan House in the Fog - This is one of the two large hotels on the island. 28 rooms with only few with private bathrooms. (09/07/12)
