No actual video for this tune. There probably was one back in the MTV days, but searching the web just unearthed several versions of the song with static backgrounds. Save Ferris’s probably best remembered for their ska treatment cover of the Dexy’s Midnight Runners’ song Come On Eileen.
Growing up, if my mom wasn’t listening to the Red Sox baseball game on the radio, she had it tuned to the local Country Music station. So naturally, as soon as I had a radio of my own, I vowed to never listen to country music again. It was second on my list of hated music genres, right behind opera. Sure enough, as I hit adulthood, I discovered that it wasn’t that bad after all.
It never made it into a “What’s kind of music do you listen to” conversation, but occasionally after a few months of a steady rock and roll diet, a week of country was a nice palette cleanser. And even sometimes when I got bored with the videos on MTV, I would watch CMT for a bit1. Which is where I discovered this voice.
I went through a phase where I was in love with Pacific Island Music. It started from hearing Cecilio & Kapono back while on Guam in the late 70’s. And was rekindled by this surprise hit medley by Israel KamakawiwoÊ»ole in the early 90’s. And now, just by posting this, I’m off to YouTube and down that rabbit hole…
This song ran over the ending credits of a Sopranos episode and I absolutely fell for it, so I bought the 2 CD soundtrack album to the TV show called Peppers & Eggs. This song was the best one of the 20 some odd tracks on those two discs. So then I bought Kasey Chambers’ CD entitled “The Captain” and once again it was the best song on that disc as well. A one-hit-wonder for me, and definitely on the Quintessential Burn list as a product of that time (early 2000’s) but it is still worth another listen:
When I started posting YouTube videos from my December 2004 Quintessential Burn mix CD in 2013, I posted five videos. Then in 2015 I posted just one. In 2019 I posted another. Out of the 19 songs on the list this will the be eighth. And the only reason it surfaced into my consciousness is I was going through my hundreds of burned CDs full of MP3s and found the Quintessential Mix one. This is a catchy tune that put Blues Traveler on them map with its just as catchy video:
I was cleaning up the Desktop of the Desktop PC and found a text file labeled “quintessential burn” and instead of deleting it, I opened it and thought, “Hmmm, haven’t done a music video in a while. I wonder when the last time I did one?”
When I started from my December 2004 Quintessential Burn mix CD in 2013 I posted five videos. Then in 2015 I posted just one. Three and a half years later it is time for another don’t you think? Out of the 19 song on the list I have posted 6 of the and all have started with odd track numbers, so here is one that has an even track number…
Because I really have nothing, I’ll just toss out another music video from my Quintessential Burn series. This time it is Van Morrison sharing the vocals with a backup singer from a live 1979 performance in Belfast:
